What is Riba (Interest)?
Definition
Riba (Ψ±Ψ¨Ψ§) literally means 'increase' or 'addition'. In Islamic law it refers to any unjustified increase in a loan or exchange transaction β most commonly interest on borrowed money. It is one of the most strictly prohibited things in Islam.
Quranic Prohibition
"O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of riba, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger." (Quran 2:278-279)
"Allah has permitted trade and forbidden riba." (Quran 2:275)
Types of Riba
**Riba al-Nasiah:** Interest on delayed payment β the most common form (bank loans, credit cards, mortgages). **Riba al-Fadl:** Exchanging the same commodity in unequal amounts (e.g. 1kg gold for 1.1kg gold).

Islamic Banks
Islamic banks operate on profit-and-loss sharing instead of interest. Your deposit is treated as an investment in the bank's Sharia-compliant activities. Returns are called 'profit share' not 'interest'.
Current Accounts
Most scholars allow conventional current accounts (no interest paid/charged) for everyday banking needs when no Islamic alternative exists. Any interest accidentally accrued should be donated to charity β not kept.
