The 15 Ayat of Sajdah in the Holy Quran
“Indeed, those who are near your Lord are not too proud to worship Him; they glorify Him, and to Him they prostrate.”
“And to Allah prostrates whoever is within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by compulsion, and so do their shadows in the mornings and evenings.”
“They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.”
“And they fall upon their faces weeping, and the Quran increases them in humble submission.”
“When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.”
“Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains...”
“O you who have believed, bow and prostrate and worship your Lord and do good that you may succeed.”
“And when it is said to them, 'Prostrate to the Most Merciful,' they say, 'And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?' And it increases them in aversion.”
“Allah — there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Great Throne.”
“Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and glorify praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.”
“And he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance.”
“But if they are arrogant — then those who are near your Lord glorify Him by night and by day, and they do not become weary.”
“So prostrate to Allah and worship Him.”
“And when the Quran is recited to them, they do not prostrate?”
“No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah].”
Authentic Duas to Recite in Sujud al-Tilawah
“My face has prostrated to the One Who created it, and brought forth its hearing and sight by His might and power. Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators.” (Sahih — Tirmidhi 580, Abu Dawud 1414)
“O Allah, write down for me a reward for it with You, relieve me of a burden through it, make it for me a treasure stored with You, and accept it from me as You accepted it from Your servant Dawud.” (Hasan — Tirmidhi 579)
How to Perform & Fiqh Rules
1. When Reciting Outside Prayer
- Ensure you have Wudu and are facing the Qibla (recommended by majority).
- Say “Allahu Akbar” and prostrate directly onto the ground. (No hand-raising required according to the majority).
- Recite the authentic dua or “Subhana Rabbiyal A'la” (3 times).
- Say “Allahu Akbar” and rise up. No Tashahhud or Salam is required according to the stronger opinion of scholars.
2. When Reciting Inside Prayer
- Upon reciting a verse of Sajdah, immediately say “Allahu Akbar” and go into a single prostration.
- Recite the dua of Sujud al-Tilawah.
- Say “Allahu Akbar” and stand straight back up into Qiyam.
- Resume reciting further verses, or proceed directly into Ruku if the Surah has concluded.
• Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali: Sunnah Mu'akkadah (highly encouraged Sunnah). It is not sinful to leave it, but highly rewarded to perform. Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra) recited Surah An-Nahl on the Minbar and prostrated, then recited it the next Friday and did not prostrate, remarking: “Allah has not made prostration obligatory upon us unless we wish.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1077).
