The Science of Maqasid al-Shari'ah
Imam Al-Shatibi (d. 790 AH) fully developed Maqasid al-Shari'ah in his masterwork Al-Muwafaqat. Beyond the five essentials, Maqasid has three tiers: (1) Daruriyyat β essentials without which society collapses. (2) Hajiyyat β complements that remove hardship. (3) Tahsiniyyat β improvements that add beauty and virtue. Modern Islamic scholars use Maqasid to address novel questions in finance, bioethics, and law.
