Levels of Certainty in Knowledge
Islamic epistemology recognizes three levels: (1) Dhann — conjecture or probability (below 51%). (2) Ghalabat al-Dhann — preponderance of probability (above 51–99%). (3) Yaqin — certainty (100%). In Aqeedah (creed), only matters established with Yaqin (certain evidence) are binding. In Fiqh (law), most rulings are based on Ghalabat al-Dhann. This is why scholars say: 'The foundation of worship is Yaqin; the foundation of rulings is Ghalabat al-Dhann.'
